SmugFig API

October 30th, 2007

The StreetsOfBoston’s SmugFig API is a Java API that provides integration with the SmugMug JSON API and is built on top of kallasoft’s SmugMug Java API. It is developed/released under the Apache License v2.0

Kallasoft’s Java API lays the foundation for the SmugFig API.  Kallasoft’s Java API is more geared towards Smugmug functions. It maps each Smugmug’s JSON API’s function (e.g. Create, GetInfo) to an appropriate Java Class.

The SmugFig API is more geared toward Smugmug objects. It maps each Smugmug’s object (e.g. Category, Album, Image) to an appropriate Java Class. The SmugFig API offers the following pieces of functionality:

  • It removes the burden of remembering the names or order of the JSON parameters.
  • It adds a simple level of change-management.
It provides easy ways of determining whether SmugFig objects (Categories, Albums, etc) have changed or remain unchanged with respect to their values on Smugmug’s servers.
  • It adds a simple mechanism of caching to reduce network traffic.
Caching is done in the background and not visible to the user of SmugFig objects.

Nikon D3 series coming… (part 2)

June 25th, 2007

This is a follow up on my initial post that can be found here:

http://blog.antonspaans.com/2007/05/24/nikon-d3-rumour

Thom Hogan has added some more information about his reasoning in speculating on the announcement date for the new pro-body of Nikon. Here are some quotes:

… With virtually all of Nikon’s pro announcements, there has usually been about a two or three-week early warning due to the press event …

… There’s also a longer lead early warning when Nikon Japan does the initial roll-out (in Japan) to the subsidiaries …

… It appears that the latter has occurred, which is fueling a lot of the speculation, but the former hasn’t …

… People with long memories will remember my hinting at the release date by pointing people to the sporting event calendar. If I were a betting man, I’d bet that the first public appearance of the new Nikon pro body would be at the world track and field championships in Osaka, Japan in August (Aug 25-Sept 2). I tried to hint at that back earlier this spring, but I guess I was being too cryptic. …

Photosynth

June 11th, 2007

Photosynth is a system that can analyze large collections of digital pictures of objects and places, analyze them for similarities and display them in a re-constructed three dimensional virtual space.

Navigation through this space takes place by zooming in or out, going into more detail or less detail and by moving through the 3D space itself. Pictures themselves can be linked and these links can be used for navigation as well.

For more information click this link:

I tried out the application for a little while. I got lost in the navigation sometimes and I needed to zoom-out or go back ‘Home’ to get my bearings.

I wonder what impact this application can have, especially if it comes online for everyone to access. Google’s Street View comes to mind. It will be very interesting to follow…
