Lens Lust?

I guess it’s because it’s that time just before christmas again…? I don’t know. But anytime (i think that) i have a little money to burn, i think about buying that lens i ‘always’ wanted (good thing i did not say ‘needed’).

This is my current equipment (follow the link). And i’m thinking about extending it with these:

Nikon Fisheye AF 10.5mm f/2.8G ED DX
I’ve seen come keeeewwwl pictures from this 180 degree wide fisheye lens. They look awesome. I’d love to shoot some city scenes (buildings) with this one.

Nikon Zoom Super Wide Angle AF 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX
This one would become my walk-around lens, replacing the 18-70mm one that came with my Nikon D70 kit. The quality is supposed to be great and the f/2.8 ain’t bad either. However, the price….. :(

Am i stupid to spend my money on these? Let me know! :)

Whhooohoa! I’m feeling lucky still having my trusty Sony F717! :)
I don’t know what the kit lens has got to offer in terms of speed, but seeing the price for this 2.8 baby I don’t know if it’s worth it. Are all good lenses this expensive or isn’t this expensive in the dSLR world?

The fisheye thing sounds fun - I even thought of buying such a thing for my 717, but I don’t thing I would use it very often, as the pictures are too distorted to be of good use. It sure looks cool having fish-eye pics hanging around the house.

In the end I can’t help you very much with the decision as I’m from a whole different world having no insight into dSLR what-so-ever. Shortly I was in the same situation as you in deciding what I wish camera-wise for my birthday and Christmas. I also choose some relatively expensive stuff (polarizer, expensive close-up filter) and struggeled a lot with it.

Thanks for your comment on my blog and good luck,
    Sebastian

Fisheye 10.5 f/2.8? Nice! Your blogspot blog is working just fine!
Shall I use this or your wordpress.com for the Photographers Blounge?

Stupid for buying lenses? What are you nuts?! :-)

It’s one of the great pleasures of being a photographer. Making images with as many different tools as you can get your hands on.

But it’s also fun to rent lenses now and then. I rent from Calument here in San Francisco, and if you pick up a lens Friday morning, you don’t have to return it until Monday night and you still pay only 1 day rental fee.

    cheers!
    Trish

Excellent choices in lenses. I want a fisheye but worry that I might quickly get bored of it or usually not have when I would want, I have a f2.8 lens and I love it for outdoor portraits. I am wanting even faster ones now for the low light capability with out a flash. Great blog by the way :)
