Photo Journalism Class: Week 3
Today was the 3rd class of the photo journalism course. Earlier I changed the subject of my main project. Instead of architects and their buildings the subject will be The Flower Trade.
In Boston there is a group of Dutch expatriates organized in an organization called NLBorrels. I’m part of it as well and once every month we have our ‘borrel’ (i.e. drinks). Another Dutchman member of NLBorrels trades in flowers. His name is Gijs van den Broek. Last borrel I asked him if he, his work, his suppliers and customers could be the subject of my photo journalistic project. He agreed to it. If everything works out, I will follow him one day at work, where he visits customer and I will follow him to trade- and flower-shows.
The goal of this project is to get short and focused story of the Dutch flower trade here in Boston and Massachusetts.
I took the first couple of shots, just to grease up my photographic abilities
. They are shots of some flowers I took at the flower-shop in the Prudential Mall. I chose to make these shots to practice shooting flowers in difficult lighting conditions. You can find them here:
For the final project I will shoot flowers in full color and saturate the pictures as much as possible, unless the emotional value of the picture requires something else. I will shoot everything else, such as portraits and locations, in contrasty black and white.
Our weekly for next class is to shoot portraits. Preferrably, the portraits should be connected to our main projects, but this is not absolutely necessary. I’ll try to get Gijs’ picture and some pictures from the street
