Photo Journalism Class: Week 4

Last Tuesday i spent a morning at the New England Grows conference at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center together with Gijs and some of his colleagues from Langeveld as part of my Photo Journalism project. I met his colleagues Dirk, Jordy and Alex. It was great meeting them and see them market and sell their wares to (potential) customers.

Monday the 13th Gijs will be visiting the head quarters of Langeveld. I’ll join him and visit his company and i hope to get some nice pictures from there.

Tomorrow is the first field-trip of our class. We’ll be taking pictures of the parade for the Chinese New Year, the year of the dog. The weather right now is miserable. I hope that tomorrow morning it will be a little better :)

The weekly for week 4 is "Low/difficult light". I think i’ve already done plenty of those. Shooting at the BCEC was not very easy. The light was not so much low, but it was difficult: incoming daylight, fluorescent light from the overhead lamps and plenty of different colored floodlights were installed by the various vendors at the convention.

‘t Was good thing that i bought and read the first chapters of Dan Margulis’ book about the L*a*b color-space. Mixed white balance it quite easily solved using L*a*b. Just move the input points of the a and b channels that should be 50 to the output points 50 (unless, of course, you’d want to have the picture a certain color cast). However, if there is no known white/gray surface in your picture, fixing  the white balance is actually quite difficult :)

Until next weekly!
