Digital Archives: What to choose for media?

Every time i need to make a backup, I’m wondering what the best way of doing this is.

For now, I’m making temporary backups of all my pictures using Windows’ ‘Backup’ functionality. I archive my entire hierarchy of pictures into an archive-file and store this file on a separate disk.

But for more permanent (and removable) storage that can be used for archival purposes, what is currently the state-of-art?

I found this article:

Read this article for more and detailed information. In short, this is what I learned from this article:

  1. Use Tayio Yuden manufactured DVD+R (single layered) discs.
  2. A good place to buy them is here: http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-dvd-plus-r-media.html?WT.mc_id=cjtext. They guarantee that these disks are made by TY.
  3. MAM-A and Kodak have come up with a gold archival media. The quality of these types of media are excellent and may even be better than TY’s… but their price is much much higher ($2+ per disc).
